I got one of those casees with lights and i want to see them in action can i just hook them up to the power supply or do i have to have a motherboard for them to turn on? here are some pics if they help

Normal hookup to the molex and they should work. Modders are getting into interrupters that make the lights flash on and off.

see i dont know what a molex is the power supply has like a trian of wires and connectors is it one of those? is there like a picture that can giude me

The molex is the same white connector that plugs into the CD units. Find a spare one of these that comes from the power supply and it will fit onto one of the white blocks on the end of the cable from the fan.
