Alrighty , I have a feeling I might not have enough info for the question I am going to ask..but maybe someone will be able to give me an idea in which direction to go. Have been googling as well. :)

Brother just called, tells me he is getting a blue scree error message:

***Windows Protection Error, you must start your system, halted.***

He Installed Windows 98 with an ME upgrade.

When he reboots, puter goes into safe mode automatically.

Babbled this off to me...

He has a Compaq Presaio
80 G Partitioned hard drive.
633 Intel Processor ;)

Could someone let me know how much more info is needed to help here, or if they have an idea already? I am afraid I am far too much a novice to be giving advice , not to mention have been an XP user for three years, so not familiar with 98 or ME either.

Sorry for everything being so vague. ;)

Thanks in advance for any help that comes my way, instead of rotten veggies or rocks that would surely be far more deserved. :tazz:

Hmm I have found some info about upgrades from 98 to ME that tell me older versions of MCAFEE or PANDASCAN will cause an error on startup.
Guess that will be my first task, to call back and see if he has either of these running. :tazz:

A lot of causes for that one....

Here is a start.

http://support.micro...om/?kbid=149962

He is running (or trying to) Windows ME, now? DId he just upgrade, or he did it a while ago?

If he has been running for a while, and problems just started, it tends to be one thing, but if he JUST upgraded, they tend to be another.

So, what group does he fall in?

Hmm there could be quite a few answers for that one I am sure. heh heh *crackpot comes to mind* :tazz:

anyhoo.. ;) He told me that he just did the upgrade...if I understood him correctly, he reinstalled Windows 98 and then did the ME upgrade just recently.

Thanks for your help gerryf! ;)

I'm sorry, I did not make myself clear.

Has he ever successfully run Windows ME? Or did the error occur directly following the update?

OK I got more info this evening. He actually has Windows 98 w/ ME upgrade installed on his computer. He was having problems with it ..slow, pages not wanting to come up , crashing (probably full of spyware and crud) anyway, he tried to do a restore with the Windows 98*admin disc and when he tried to restart that is when he got the error messages.
He tells me that he did a msconfig shutting down almost everything at startup and when rebooting it automatically goes to safe mode.

Now any ideas? Without having the thing here to look at I am even more lost than I bet you are right now. :tazz:
