Hello, I have a 9yr old Compaq Armada with a Windows ME operating System. It has 5.58MG Hard Drive with I think 1.86mg free.

Because it is constantly choking, freezing, rebooting itself amongst other problems, someone informed me that WINDOWS ME is a system with too many problems that needs too much memory to run.

However, I've been told that my system is too old to upgrade, I thought maybe going back to the old faithful WINDOWS 98 might be better?

This sounds like the best solution to my undying problems without actually buying a new computer. So heres the questions;

How do I 'downgrade' my Windows System to WINDOWS 98?
I can borrow a mates installation cds cant I?
Will I lose all my files and settings and software...ie should I make some back up cds?
How do I take off my Windows ME in order to put on the WINDOWS 98?

Can any of this be done? Or should I just give it in to an expert?

One LAST and final question I swear. Do you think my computer with ME would be fine if I just installed alot more memory? I know for a fact that my system's memory can be expanded up to 512mb!

Thanks so much for the help!! So very much appreciated!! :whistling:  :help:

Older Computers, in general, don't work very well with Windows/xp.. The older the less chance it's going to work.

The first thing I would want to know is what type of a processor do I have.

The second is what type Ram, PC 100 or PC 133 and how much and what kind of Ram will the mother board take.

The third would be Hard Drive size.. My wife has a 20 gig HD and runs Windows/xp.

For windows\xp to run good you would need:

256 or better Ram

20 gig or more Hard Drive. ( to give you plenty hard drive storage)

Pentium II 350MHz or better processor..

They say xp will run on 128 mb ram, I have tried and believe me you will want 256 mb ram or better..

Hope this helps you..

Nothing new about windows there then

Serious though I would do a cleanup first defrag and scandisk
the hard drive, virus/spyware check ect

do you have failing hardware ????

With ME you can do a reinstall from C:\windows\options

Where the cab files are, don’t forget you may need the serial number
You can get this from the registry if you lost it

Type regedit at the run command

Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

In the right pane

Product Key

To install win98 again you will have format the drive, if you have a burner save any files first.

download any drivers you may need if you dont have the disks first
