[Viv24]

I have a file called dummy.tmp that shows up anytime my computer is restarted and within a moment it just disappears, I can't locate the file at all. I have cleaned my tmp folders, and run Avast, Ewido, AVG, Super Anti Spyware, Adaware, and not a single one of them found anything.

I know something is wrong because anytime my computer is left to idle for more than an hour or two it shuts itself down and restarts.

Those do look like false positives to me and I don't think the dummy.tmp file is malicious.

I don't see anything bad in your Hijack This log, but let's do a couple of other scans to see what shows up. I'd also like to see an Uninstall list.

* Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

** Also go ahead and do the following:

** Before you proceed with the removal directions below you need to turn off Windows Defender's realtime protection as it will interfere with the changes we are trying to make.

• Open Windows Defender and click on Tools > General Settings.
• Scroll down and remove the check by "Turn on realtime protection (recommended)".
• Click "Save"
• Restart your computer.
• Leave it disabled until we are finished here.

* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

I'm working on the Panda Scan right now, and it's finding a lot of things, I hope to have the results within the next hour, and I'll post the log, I figured I'd just go ahead and send the uninstall list while I'm waiting.

You need to leave the computer alone while the online scan is running. Your activities may disrupt the scan. Please let it complete before you do anything else.

After the Activescan has finished, go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following:

ewido anti-malware (See Note below)
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Viewpoint Media Player

Note: Ewido was recently bought out by AVG. Ewido Anti-Spyware in now AVG-Antispyware, which you have installed so you need to remove the old ewido.

Firstly the Bit Defender scan found nothing and it was too large to attach, however when I restarted after deleting WinAdServX.dll the dummy.tmp file didn't show up, so I guess that's fixed...

I haven't had a problem with the computer just shutting down by itself like it was doing, so I think it might be fixed, still not sure though.

* There are a few other things I'd like to address. One issue is that you have two antiviruses running. You should never run two AVs at the same time. They will conflict with each other causing all sorts of problems. You need to decide whether you want to use Avast or Norton then uninstall the one you don't want to use.

Another issue along the same lines is the fact that you have three anti-spyware apps loading when Windows starts running their realtime protection. This is overkill. They are all trying to do the same job which can cause conflicts. You need to decide which one to use and disable the others.

Finally you have quite a few unnecessary apps loading when Windows starts. These run all the time even when you aren't using them therby draining your system resources and slowing it down. I'll post directions to help with that at the end of this reply along with other useful maintenance tips.


* If I had you use Killbox to delete any files, go ahead and delete the C:\!Killbox folder then empty the Recycle Bin.


* Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.


* Go to Windows update and install all "High Priority Updates".


* Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.


Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently.

Keeping the programs that run when Windows boots up to a minimum is of great importance and has a significant effect on the performance of your pc. These I refer to here as "startups". ** See the Note below for info to help you identify the startups in your Hijack This log.

Another thing that can have a significant effect on your pc's performance is fragmentation. Over time the files on your computer will become fragmented. This can cause your machine to slow down and freeze. This fragmentation can be corrected by running the Windows Defragmentation tool.

You should go ahead and do all of the following now:

1: Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the Windows System Configuration Utility. I do not recommend using Hijack This to control your startups.

To use the Windows System Configuration Utility, Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Look them up at those links by copying and pasting the name in the brackets (as bolded in the example above [QuickTime Task]) in the search box on the Startuplist (Castlecops) and Startup Programs Database (Bleepingcomputer) pages. Read the Usage Instructions/information that tells you how to use the pages and identify what to remove and what not to remove. For example, it tells you that if you see a "Y" under the Status column for startup entry it means Yes that entry is normally needed to run at startup. "N" under status means No it is not needed to run at startup and you should disable it. "X" means that it is definitely not needed and usuall the Xs are malware. There is more info on those pages that tell you how to use the lists so please read that before you begin disabling startups.

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Okay now I'm having a new problem.

I'm signed on from my laptop because the internet explorer on my pc will not work.
The window opens, and then it freezes in the center of the screen and constantly makes that horrible "bomp" noise.

I'm trying hard to get my hi-jack this log on here, but it won't let me do it.

I checked the processes though and there are a couple of questionable ones which is the reason I think it is either spyware or virus related.
I am trying to get the internet to open long enough for me to post, but it won't even load the homepage.

I'm running AVG in safe mode on it to see if something is detected.

I'll try my best to get that log up here.

Sorry for not being able to provide a log at the time, I'll try again when I reboot and see if it works.
If it just doesn't work I guess I'll resort to typing it all out

There are entries from Norton I can't get rid of even though it has been uninstalled, and the regular internet explorer+ addons still will not work.
I scanned with AVG, Windows defender, and Avast and nothing...

Download and run the tool at this link to remove Norton remnants:

It is the first one for XP/2000.

First make sure you have uninstalled all of Norton/Symantec products via Add/Remove programs then follow the directions on the page to run the removal tool.

After you have done that, please do this:

* Download WinPFind

• Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
• Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
• Dont do anything with it yet!

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.


Reboot into Safe Mode


Doubleclick WinPFind.exe

• Select " Run Add ONs" and then select ALL the options in the box below it, Press Apply
• Click "Start Scan"
• It will scan the entire System, so please be patient and let it complete.

Reboot back to Normal Mode!

• Go to the WinPFind folder
• Locate WinPFind.txt
• Attach the WinPFind.txt to your next post here please.
• Don't try to copy and p[aste it. It will be too long for one post.
