CD-RW problem

I have a Systemax system running Windows Me that has now had two CD-RWs. Upon installation they are both reader and writer, however, after a short period of time, it is no longer recognized by the software as a writer. The system is not connected to the internet and the burning software came with the burner. I have to believe there is something going on within the system, since it has now happened twice. Has anyone got an idea on what may be going on?
