My daughter's computer was recently infected with Malware. It was stopping, restarting, and producing strange error messages. We control the sites she can visit, and she only emails with a couple of friends. One friend, though, does send lots of cartoons and images, which we suspect to be the cause of her problem. Her computer is a play computer, but it is networked with other family computers.

We have 3 computers on a wireless network, so I scanned mine with AdAware, SpyBot S&D, and AVG 7.1, all of which produced clean results. Then I downloaded the free version of Spyware Doctor 4.0, and it returned 82 infections, of which several were high threats. The most disconcerting to me were Trojan.Dumaru, DSS Agent, and Bargain Buddy. Are these actually malware, are they real threats, and why didn't the other programs catch them? I am considering purchasing the full version of Spy Doctor to fix the infections, but something doesn't feel right about this. I also ran Hijack This v1.99.1, but the results are jibberish to me. I haven't been having major issues with my computer, so I'm not sure what to think...

I appreciate any advice you can offer.

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go

Some antimalware programmes positively "goad" you into purchase by exaggerating the threat level when they report on your system, others do not. Please do not expect me to give a personal opinion of which do and which don't.

For what it is worth, I believe the top AV programmes are Kaspersky and NOD32.

I believe that the top antimalware (spyware) programmes are SpySweeper and AVG antispyware.

If you would care to post a HJT log for the affected PC, I will gladly look it over and advise.
