Also when i run msconfig it comes up environment variables were found in the legacy files AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS and the variables were moved to the windows registry.
Can anyone help ? All responses would be greatly appreciated .

If I am reading that right, go to device manager, select your soundcard and remove it...reboot, with the windows cd in the cd-rom.
That will reinstall your mmsystem.dll and associated settings
You can open autoexec.bat and config.sys in notepad and delete everything you find in it, then save it as a blank file -- or rename autoexec.bat and config.sys as autoexec.bak and config.bak
Thes files are not used by windows me, but are only there if you still need an old DOS program
