active mixer devices--gone

i have suddenly lost the ability to use skype. skype tell me that there is a problem with the playback device

when i go to volume control i get this message:

'there are no active mixer devices available. you may install mixer devices from the add/remove hardware wizard in the control panel."

when i go to control panel/sounds and multimedia, where i used to have usb device listed for my usb headphones, all i have now is modem #0 line playback.

i use a usb headset. i run win2k.

help.

Sounds like you need to install a compatible driver for the sound-chip. This may either be a chip on the mobo (integrated sound) or an add-on sound-card fitted in one of the PCI slots.

If it's the former (integrated sound) we need to know the make/model number of the mobo so the driver can be downloaded from the mobo manufacturer's website. However, if the PC is a famous brand like Packard Bell or Dell, we need to know what brand/model it is since all drivers for them are supplied by them and are likely to have been modified to match modified hardware.
