I can't seem to play certain file types like .mpeg/mpg and some others i don't remember.

I have a DivX codec.

What others should I get?

The easist method i have found is to use Video Inspector to find what codecs i need.

A good one for AVI files is Gspot.

I usually just install the Klite mega codec pack it has drivers for every media format ive encountered and comes with media player classic which is one of the better media players around.
