Hi. Now, did you try the router itself at a friend's house, or did you connect to his own router, just to see if the laptop works right? Before we blame bad hardware, have you asked AOL to guide you through the setup process, as far as if you use a Static or Dynamic IP, etc? They should be able to give you that sort of information that you need in order to properly run your network.

Used the aol set up that came with the router but it didnt work the set up says that when you plug the router in that certain lights should come on............my router internet light didnt come on and although it seems that the laptop is talking to the router the router does not seem to see the internet..

when I plug the router into my friends set up ie just the cable to the phone point the internet light comes on.at this point as far as I can see the only difference would be the phone socket....

so Im wondering what would happen if you pluged a router into an ordinary not broadband phone point and is this what is wrong...aol say broadband activated,,,,,,,,,,,but maybe it isint

Alright. Well, I want to verify some things with you... First, you should have an Ethernet port in the back of that router, not an RJ5 (standard phone line) port. I want to make sure your connection is as follows... Your wall jack, with the standard phone line goes into your modem, and the modem connects to the router using an Ethernet cable. Is that correct? Did AOL give you a cable modem, or some other kind?

If I plug the router into the phone filter with the cable aol provided and then plug the filter socket into the wall socket..If I power up the router the internet light does not come on...the router at this point is only connected to its power sorce and by cable supplied to filter and from filter to wall socket. If I had the ethernet cable in port 1 and connected to my laptop then the ethernet port 1 light comes up on the router.just as the insatallation said it would

If i use exactly the same equipment and plug it exactly as I have above into my mates line the internet light works?

also the router can see his network and it detects his computer so it would seem to be working ok at my mates but not at my house

It's always a possibility that the line was not configured properly by the service provider. Especially if it works for a friend with the same service. Keep in touch :whistling:
