Which of these is the better processor overall? AMD FX-74 is more expensive (motherboard 349) though, but does it offer more performance than Core 2 Extreme QX6700?

This is also in the incorrect forum. The AMD FX-74 is two processors on a single motherboard. While the motherboard is more expensive it offers you a great upgradeable route. AMD is support to release their quad core processor at the end of this year to the beginning of next year. These processors are rumored to work on this motherboard, making the 2x quad processors on one motherboard a great opportunity. However once again this is a rumor.
At current time however the two processors (AMD FX-74) call for 2x the power from your PSU and 2x the heat in your case. They get very warm and this microarchitecture is on its last leg. Bother competitors exchange wins in benchmarks, but the QX6700 does in the end come on top. It's up to you to decided, however the AMD FX-74 isn't very popular at this point in time, but then nor is the QX6700 due to it's price.
If you want my honest opinion though, quad cores won't see any advances till the beginning of next year and very little software takes advantage of the extra 2 cores at this moment in time. I believe that the integration to quad core will be slower then the one to dual core. If you can wait till next year, quad cores will be competitive and there will be a real use for the extra 2 cores.

P.S. The QX6700 isn't a native quad core, it's similar to the pentium D where two older processors were glued together to form one. The QX6700 is 2 Core 2 Duo's squished together.

When the quadcores come, don't immediatly buy them. In 3 months from the release date, the price is almost guaranteed to be 10-15% lower.
Because in those 3 months, newer series rise from the factories.
I'm sure I'll wait till the dual quadcore processors are on the market.

Agreed there isn't a real advantage to them, but in the comming future there will be. Supreme commander is multithreaded (will use 4 cores not just 2), Flight simulator X will get a SP1 patch from microsoft for the muiltithreaded support as well as the most anticipated title of the year, Crysis amonst many other games.

On April 22 the QX6700 will drop like a stone to 550$US, thats the date of the intel price drop. On Augest 23, it'll drop to 300$ and they will be phasing all current Core2Duo processors out, or so it has been said.

Also why wouldn't you just say octo processors, they are rumored to be coming out at the end of this year, believe it or not.....I'm still trying to grasp this.

One last thing, no matter what you buy it'll decrease in $$$ the minute you take it off the shelve. To me its worth having the product and having an advantage over others before the next big thing is released around the corner. If you wait and wait and wait till the next price cut or next big thing comes around the bend, you'll never get your computer.

James

P.S. QX6800 has been released, now thats the best CPU out to date. Also Apple is now selling octo core (2x QX6700 or QX6800) PC's. It's believed that only 3000 exist and 1200 are in the US (not a joke).
