I have read the posts...don't find much there that we haven't tried.

I did try the idea of inserting my own text into the bth.inf file, and that didn't do anything positive.
I do notice now that I cannot delete nor uninstall hidden (greyed-out) devices at all. Any thoughts??

1) Yes – I wanted you to review & wanted to see your conclusion – Agrees with mine
2) I do not know what text you entered/altered – But one of the version should have had the correct VID and PID correctly entered –
3) Cannot delete or uninstall is interesting – This agrees with what everyone is stating
a) btw drivers to not comply with PnP
b) btw drivers to not coexist with PnP – (This is the significance of your latest findings)
c) We discovered that there are 2 drivers that requires PnP usage – btw & bth
d) And that each requires an associated inf file that defines this Kensington Device

Now I have been trying to review many of those cases, trying to find common denominator, that links them with you. That means I had to look at other Forums to get more info – but other Forums do not have – Geeks to GO – Management – Philosophy – Wisdom –Talent or Camaraderie – So I could not gain much insight -

However I do see that you are unique – because you have both successful & unsuccessful installations – I have been using the – Shop & Compare Method of troubleshooting. And it has helped, but there is still a key issue, that I am overlooking – And I believe that will be – the common link between the others & your Desktop problem -

I think that I may be close to discovery – but then I have to figure out how to use this knowledge to circumvent the issue –

I have a little wireless network here between my DSL gateway and the laptop. The desktop and laptop can and do share files through the gateway. That part of the hardware functions just fine and doesn't depend at all on the bluetooth adapter.

So I'm still scratching my head. You've been great, and I appreciate all the time you have spent with me. I would still like to get to the bottom of this issue - now it has become sort of a challenge - man vs. machine, and all that -
First off, yes, I ant to solve this problem. So I thank you again for your assistance. I get pretty stubborn with issues of this nature, and I'm quite curious to see the eventual resolution.

I know – You have done everything that I have asked – Even when it was redundant to you! – It was a procedure variation for my curiosity. I try to explain my directions – [but not if it adds confusion] – But I will always explain my findings/discoveries or interpretation of data –

Looks as if you are into – Flight Simulation pretty intensely –

***Do you use the Laptop for any of these games/programs?
Are any of the CH HID ready for wireless? Or are you intending to install wireless devices, when you get this Bluetooth installed/functional***

It's late and I am beat, but I wanted to tell you to stop working on this problem.

I had some other SERIOUS troubles crop up on the desktop after my last posts. They were not directly related to the Bluetooth issue, but I suspect that their causes may both have originated with a corrupt registry. I can only prove that by inference.

Long story short, I ended up on the tech support line with Dell - about six hours over the past two days. Resulted in a "restore-to-new" operation. Of course all data was backed up first....

After installing my antivirus products, I decided to take a chance and install the Kensington stuff. It worked. As in...like a charm.

So while I can't provide a diagnosis for the problem...and I really wish we could have pinned this down....the issue is resolved by default.

If you want I can provide more detail in the next post. If you would just as soon close the book on this nightmare, let me know.

Registry Errors are always a risk – This is why I am not too aggressive, and review data so much.

was not too painful, and you were able to restore most of your data –

After installing my antivirus products, I decided to take a chance and install the Kensington stuff. It worked. As in...like a charm.

Yes – I could see that it was installed before – but appeared to be in conflict with the existing wireless keyboard & mouse. I was about ready to send to - http://www.usbman.com/
for some extensive USB remodeling – but just wanted some final verification – to be sure –
Bill has it all the steps outlined – just read & understand & backup PC 1st – and only do 1 change at a time -

I am a firm believer that – Things happen for a reason – and it may take awhile before we realize that reason – so we have to cope with the problem for now – but someday the reason will be understood -

If you want I can provide more detail in the next post. If you would just as soon close the book on this nightmare, let me know.

I am satisfied with the closing – You have several troubleshooting tools & processes to help with in the future

1) Everest – which you can purchase the fully supported program – (Not sure how much Dell support)
2) Device Manager – That is enhanced with a history recorder
3) Search Process for files
4) hopefully – a new viewpoint –

Here are a few USB suggestions for future additions

1) Use External Powered USB HUB – (To ease the PC USB Power load)
2) Use 1 hub for 1.1 devices & 1 hub for 2.0 devices (to ensure maximum speeds)
3) Might want to use – USB 2.0 Expansion Card for new USB devices [Preferably NEC Chipset – in order to prevent future conflicts
4) Exception for item 1) – Use direct USB Port with – External Powered USB Hard drive when used as a Backup Drive – (Keep backup as simple as possible – least amount of components)
