The change mod (chmod) function is where you should start.

Note: this only applies if you have an NTFS file system on your hard disk.
Then you will need ntfs-3g to read and write internal as well as external drives in Ubuntu. Depending on what version of Ubuntu you're using, the procedure might be a bit different.
Try following this guide and see if it works.

this happens when i try to use my external harddrive. I notice that there is a "lock" symbol on the folder name. Just right click and change permissions.
