Not sure where to go, so thought I'd start here.
Just set up a brand new system with Vista Home Premium. Has the following specs:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6400 - ''Conroe'' Dual Core Processor - 2.13GHz, 64-Bit, 1066FSB, 2MB Cache, VT, LGA775 - BX80557E6400
Corsair (DDR2) (VS1GB667D2) 1GB Value Select PC-5300 DDR2 RAM, 128MBx64non-ECC, 240-pin DIMM, Unbuffered, CL5
Asrock ConRoe1333 DVI/H M/board - i945G, 1333MHz FSB, Dual DDR2-667, PCI-E 16x, Int, VGA, DVI Graphics-HDCP card, SATAII 300

My old computer (this one I am using now) I have set up with wireless connection as the main computer. Everything works well and my son has no problems connecting on his laptop.

I unplugged the router from this computer and plugged it into the new computer and could not connect to the internet. I can't remember how I set this one up (I think XP was a little more simple - I get confused with the windows in Vista) and don't know why I am not connecting (and I am a baby when it comes to the workings of computers, so very basic and simple directions would help).

I would greatly appreciate some advice regarding what steps I need to take so my new computer will connect to the internet.

Whatever I do, I will need to disconnect this computer to try and get the new one to connect.

Hi frantique...

Have you tried running the Network Wizard? Open Control Panel and double click on the "Network and Sharing Center" icon. In the left pane, click the link to "Set up a connection or network" and follow the prompts to set up the network connection.

In reality, it should have found the connection on it's own... :whistling:

Thank you Wannabe1 for your help.
Network and sharing centre says I have an Unidentified Network (Public Network). Access is Limited Connectivity. There are packets sent and none received.
The diagnostic says there might be a problem with the network adapter "Local Area Connection". I turned both the modem and the router off and on and it didn't make a difference. All the while, my son is still connected on his notebook.

Well, I'm connected on my new machine ...and boy is the page big on a 19" screen!!!! Called my ISP in India and they had me connect directly from the modem and bypass the router and it worked. I'll just have to set it up for wireless now I guess. (My son's laptop has of course lost connectivity). Perhaps this is a job for tomorrow.

Edit: He said something about not having the drivers for vista and that I would need to get a yellow cable to connect from the router to the computer. Does this sound right? Is there any way I can get drivers for my wireless setup? Do they come from D-Link?

It may be drivers...it may be that the router needs to be set up.

What model D-Link router do you have?

It's DI-524 and I have a disk with Manual and Quick Install Guide which I've never used - I set it all up on the XP with the help of SpaceCowboy's wonderful tutorial.

Have a look at the information on This Page. To configure the router, you'll need to type it's address (192.168.0.1) in the address bar of your browser. You should then be able to configure the router's connection from the configuration page that takes you to.

Thank you Wannabe1. I'll attempt it tomorrow (today!). I need to get some sleep now. Will be fairly snowed under for the next two days, so if it looks like being a problem I'll put it off until I have lots of spare time. I have the manual as well as the CD (and SpaceCowboy's directions for securing) and will follow it and hopefully it will work out OK. At least in the meantime I'm on the net. :whistling:

My son and his laptop have been away for a few weeks so am only now trying to set up the wireless connection. I cannot access 192.168.0.1 - get the unavailable page. Also cannot get anything on the net. Tried resetting the router and it appears to make no difference. Tried the Network Diagnostics and it reported that connection could not be made to the internet. It appears the computer is not recognising the existence of the router. I went to D-Link Australian Support and they state that this product does not require drivers - that the device runs independent of an operating system. Thought that maybe one of the ethernet cables might be faulty, but it all worked fine on my XP and I have swapped the cables to connect directly to the modem so I can access the net to get here .. and they both seem OK.
Where would the router be listed in Device Manager? .. under Network Adapter it has Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family PCI Gigabit Ethernet Nic.
When I try to set up a wireless network it states that it does not detect the router.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This might be a stupid question.... on the laptop keyboard, just above the keys, is there a little button that looks kind of like this?

((I))

If there is, then click it and see if your computer will recogize the router/wireless network
