I get a message when I start up from Avast that it has detected an RPC error. While in this mode I have tried to use WMP and get a message that WMP is not properly installed and I should reinstall. When I go to reinstall WMP I get a message that I have a newer version and cannot install an older version of WMP over it. I think I screwed up WMP when I tried to install some verizon music software for my phone, and that software was not comparable with vista. But I cant seem to uninstall WMP from my control panel. When I look at my hard drive I see WMP in my programs folde and also in a folder called Windows.old.

I can fix the Avast problem by repairing avast in my control panel. But I really would like a clean install of WMP. How best to do this?

Hi billyboy920...

Have you tried running a system restore to a date before the problem began?

well media player was not the reason for the rpc error.

While trying to resolve a issue with printer sharing between mac osx and vista (which worked fine with xp), I installed a d-link wireless printer server. I tried to get both computers to see the printer via the wireless print server and couldn't get both to print. D-link tech support was just awful, rude and unhelpful.

But I was having other issues with my non vista friendly HP printer so I replaced it with a new lexmark 9300 printer with a built in print server which works with both vista and osx. Uninstalled all the old printer related stuff and the rpc error is cured. both computers now print properly.

In the meantime, off topic, I also managed to establish complete file sharing between the vista machine and the mac.
