I have Vista Ultimate on my home PC. When I first set installed it a couple months ago I turned on terminal services to access my PC from work or where ever. It worked for a couple days then I didnt use it for awhile. Now went I went to use it the other day it wasnt working. I tried the different options for allowing connections and none of them helped. I cant even connect my PC from my laptop even if I am on the network at home (same network with PC) Is there something that needs to be changed to make it work again. I have had this problem with 2 other Vista Ultimate machine but my Vista Buisness machine at my office is still working fine. I am at a loss. Thanks for any help.

Are you using a router at your home? If so, you need to forward the port 3389 to the computer that you want to remote control. If you did set this up before, you should check and see what the Network IP is of the computer you want to connect to, because it could have changed. By network IP, I mean just that, your network IP, not your actual IP address for your connection to the Internet. This address will start with 192.168.x.x

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes I have checked all that a few times. I am using the correct internal address inside the network and the error that comes up is "can not connect to remote computer" I have the firewall disabled on the computer i am trying to connect to so i can rule that out. And I do have the router forwarding that port also.

Then I would suggest going to START-->RUN and type services.msc. In the new window that appears, scroll down to the Windows Firewall service. Double-click on it to open its properties. Click the START button to start the service. Then click on START-->RUN and type sysdm.cpl to open up the System Properties window. Click on the REMOTE tab and select Don't allow connections to this computer. Then click APPLY and OK. Then go back in this time select Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure), and click APPLY and OK. Then go back and STOP the Windows Firewall service.

Now double-check again that your local IP address hasn't changed and that the TCP port 3389 is forwarded to that IP address in your router. Then go to another computer on your network running XP or Vista and try to connect remotely to it using the computers LOCAL IP ADDRESS, not external IP address.

If it still doesn't work. Then I suggest you reset your router back to factory defaults using the user manual/website support as a guide on how to do this. Once it's reset you will need to find out the computers local IP address again (because it could have changed because of the router reset) and forward the TCP port 3389 to that computer again. Also make sure that your computer doesn't have BOTH Port Forwarding and Port Triggering, because you will need to make an entry in both of those if they both exist.

I think I have tried that also but I will try it that way when I get home this afternoon

Well I tried those step and it didnt help. I also did try resetting the router and forwarding 3389 again with no luck. The router seems to be working fine, it is forwarding port 21 to my computer just fine. So I am at a loss on this, terminal server should be working on this computer but of course its being stubburn.
