My laptop was bought in October 2006. It's a HP Pavillion Entertainment PC Core 2 Duo Processor. Since I downloaded Vista Ultimate last night which the laptop said it was premium ready, there has been no sound, my SQL Server is saying 2000 instead of 2005, my icons look strange as far as size, grafics have decreased, etc. When the system was completed with the upgrade it was in Windows 95' theme mode. Please help. I use this system everyday for work and can not afford to lose it. If I need to restore my computer back to Windows XP, how do I do that if I haven't created any backup files?

Hi Shane23...

Sounds like you may have "over-upgraded" a bit.

The first place I'd be looking is at drivers. Open Control Panel and double click on the "Device Manager" icon...click "Continue". In device manager, are there any devices shown with a yellow ! or ? icon next to them?

Did you format the hard drive before installing the Vista OS?

I did not format the disk. I already had another computer guy look at device manager, he also went to HP's website and downloaded my conexant HD audio driver again and updated it and it still wouldn't work.

Is the audio service started?

Click Start, then Run, type services.msc and click "Ok". Scroll down to "Windows Audio". Is it "Started" with the Startup Type set to "Automatic"?

When I updated my VAIO to Vista premium the Microsoft tech told me to format the hard drive to wipe it clean of the old OS. I had to make backup files from hard drive to reinstall after the upgrade so that I would not lose the info. Is your hard drive partitioned like my VAIO was, because mine did not come with a recovery disk either. You may want to contact a microsoft tech from their website, they are very helpful. You can call and they will walk you through everything. Even though it is slow right now, download all info you need to save, and reinstall, to disk. As far as the sound goes, look to a driver issue. Uninstall all audio drivers and then go to the HPs website for a new driver, or even research it on the HP site before uninstalling. Make sure you reboot after uninstall/reinstall. If anyone thinks I am incorrect please help advise him...He may have to reinstall from scratch like I did..When you upgraded the resolution went to a default of 800x600.
