As a 17 year old I am looking for a place for a summer job that may continue through the school year. I was wondering if anyone here has or does work for either Best Buy or Circuit City and could offer some insight into which would be the better place of employment. Wages and discounts are obviously important, but i was wondering about the general work environment and flexibility with scheduling as well. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Both stores will be a good summer job, most retail stores are very flexible with their scheduling and wages will be about the same in both stores. What are you looking to do sales floor, cashier, stock? Here are the links to their carrier pages, take a look and see what they have to offer.

Best Buy

Circuit City

If your not looking for a specific field in electronics I would suggest Home Depot they start their employees off a a pretty good wage, typically $9.00 to $11.00 an hour depending on the store location and the position applied for, and of course they are pretty flexible with their scheduling.

The funny thing is I have referred quite a few people to Home Depot and I have only been in the store one time :whistling: but I do know a few people that do work for them and they all seem to be happy.

Circuit City fired all of their higher paid employees, and then invited some of them back to work for half of what they previously made. I think they probably have morale problems and poorly trained staff as a result, but hey, it made their bottom line look good. I haen't done business with them since they ticked me off in 1989 over a car stereo. The rule in retail is that happy customers tell 4 people, unhappy ones tell eleven. I hope I've told hundreds of people how lousy their customer service is for close to 20 years.

Go to the places you are interested in working for and check the place out. Chit-chat with employees. You can learn a LOT about a place by doing this.

Previous poster BHowett has asked you what you are looking for.... this IS critical. Figure out what you want... just a pay check? Something to put in resume? Training? Specific experience?

Until you know what you want, it will be hard to get...

truer words have never been spoken...you need to decide if you want a paycheck or experience....because if you just want a paycheck...it doesn't matter where you work..you're going to hate every minute of it....but if you're working for experience...find a place in the field that you're wanting to work in and see if they seem like a good place to work so that you'll be happy while you're working..which will make it easier for you to learn the ropes
