Yes, I totally agree with you that Retrospect is no longer a good choice for backing up Macs over a network. My favorite Mac network backup software is ChronoSync and ChronoAgent, and I discuss them at length -- with step-by-step instructions -- on my blog here: Mac Network Backup Software
I also list a few other Mac network backup ideas as well in that blog entry, outside of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent.
And, don't forget online backups for your Macs as well... I like backblaze.com the best, and I discuss more here.

Allthough Josiah and scotty321 posted some nice links to softwares i think that another good software is Dmailer http://www.dmailer.c...ler-backup.html is not that old but i dont think why i don't find very often posts about them it helped me in a lot of ways and is easy to use and a + is that they offer you all for fre and online storage for backups.
Give it a go

I recently started using Backup 3 by ProSoft Eng. It is easy to use and intuitive. I allowed me to backup to my mounted network drive, and has a synchronize option. I wouldn't have changed from Time Machine under normal circumstances, but I have read some horror stories about it giving trouble with exceptionally large files. I am an Aperture user and it seemed better to be safe than sorry.
