try man grep
It's probably the fastest way to find out more about grep.
(don't yo want to use fgrep?)
You may want to look in /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net. Maybe you'll find what you're looking for there.
I came across these files when I was messing up some luknix box.
Hope it helps.

If the text is on the login screen it would most definately be places inside the configuration file for your SSHd or Telnetd Daemon. If its a message that is displayed after a login is sucessfully entered try checking /etc/.cshlogin and /etc/.login Somewhere in one of those files will be a line near the top calling for "more filename" or "less filename" or possibly even a echo to display the file on screen. As for your SSHD or TELNETD configuration directories. They are different on each Distro's default install. Consult your OS's online documentation for help there.
