Hi there,
I've bought a Dell E520 with Vista Business already installed and though everything was moving along nicely until two days ago.
Internet access is now unavailable for all users, so the only way to access is in safe mode.
I've seen one or two comments in the forums which have suggested that this may be linked to McAfee's free trial period ending, but don't understand why this would be.
All I've done so far is try a system restore to the previous day when the internet was working but obviously this hasn't worked. Now I've also noticed that the Windows Media player is not performing correctly, as a number of things don't play, and I'm beginning to wonder if there's a virus of some kind in the system.
I've not included a HJT log as yet but can do on request if required.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as my name's mud with my wife and grandson at the moment, as I assured them that the time was right to move to Vista!!!!
Thanks - Deljole.

Have you called your ISP to see if everything is working properly on their end? If it is, they might be able to 'walk' you through the set up on you're end.

Thanks for the prompt response Jacee - that was the first thing I did as I thought the ISP was temporarily down. This proved not to be the case however when I was able to connect no problem in safe mode. They suggested it was a problem in some files somewhere on my pc, although they were deliberately vague about it, as it was not 'their problem'.

Let's see what's going on... download Silent Runners

A zipped version can be found here:
http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.zip

1. Unzip/extract the file to its own folder:
C:\Silent Runners.
3. Double-click the SilentRunners.vbs inside the folder or on your desktop
to start.
4. A message box will appear asking if you want to skip the supplemental
searches.
5. Press "Yes" to skip [default] or "No" to include them.
6. Another message box will appear saying: "Silent Runners has started. A
message box like this will appear when its done." The tool will scan your
system and create a log by default, in the same directory as the script or
one your desktop. The log is named "Startup Programs (ComputerName)
date/timestamp.txt".
7. When finished, the next message to appear will say: "All Done! the
results are in the file..." (it will provide the full path location of the
log.
8. Copy & paste the log in your next reply.

Note: If you have a script blocking program you may get a warning asking if
you want to allow the script to run. Some will say "malicious script
warning" or something to that effect. There is nothing malicious about this
script, you can click to allow it to execute.

I've done as requested (in safe mode) - and went for the 'skip' option for the extra searches so here goes - best of luck with the results and hope it throws something up you can work with;

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision R51, http://www.silentrunners.org/

You have a LOP infection.
Download HijackThis! from here:
http://www.merijn.or...ackthis_sfx.exe

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window. You can now delete HijackThis_sfx.exe.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile" then post the new log in our Malware Removal forum:

You will have to right click on HJT and run as 'Administrator'.

Let's also try flushing your flush your DNS’s cache
Most DNS clients cache the results of name resolution requests. This speeds up name resolution if multiple lookups are done to the same address, such as is common when browsing the web.

Sometimes a bad DNS entry will be cached and you will need to either flush the DNS cache to get rid of it, or wait up to 24 hours for it to be dropped from the cache automatically.

Open a command prompt....from the Start menu, select Run > In the box/"open field", enter cmd.exe

enter ipconfig /flushdns press 'enter'

This illustrates a successful DNS Flush

Thanks for those tips Jacee, I'm in the process of working through the various scans etc before posting the HJT file as the Malware forum suggests. I've also started having very slow response times and system hangs when trying to log off/restart so I'm hoping this might be down to the LOP infection as well.
Thanks again, much appreciated, Derek.

Since it appears that you no longer have Antispyware or a Firewall running for your protectection...please go to this page and get some 'free' protection ASAP!!
http://www.winvistac...m/download.html
Scroll down to the bottom of this page....

Free Antivirus (just one program, not both):
Avast
AVG

Free Firewall:
ZoneAlarm

Free Antispyware/Malware protection (both of these programs):
SpywareBlaster
Spybot s&d

*** You may want to take a look at the "DeCrappifier", too. My Vista Business didn't come with any extras, but if it did and I didn't want the garbage, I'd clean it off the machine! :whistling:

After you've downloaded and installed your selection from the above link, remove McAfee. The uninstall tool is at the bottom of the page:

Thanks for all your help Jacee - you've been most informative in your recommendations and plan of action, and my system now appears to be back to normal again, i.e. can access the internet without having to resort to 'safe mode' all the time.

So a massive thanks again, I've also removed McAfee and replaced it with AV antivirus and antispyware, as well as all the other suggestions you made in your last post. I'll still run new scans in HJT and Silentrunners and post the logs in the Malware forum to be on the safe side, but for now the heat is off and all seems to be back to normal.

Although I've been viewing Geekstogo for over 18 months now, I've always been able to use other threads to solve whatever problems I've had. Now that I've actually posted my own query, I'm over the moon with the speed of response and resolution of the issue, and will be recommending the site to all my friends and colleagues.
Kindest regards, Derek.
