Hello,
I use my Mac Pro desktop a lot for audio production using Pro Tools LE 7.1. I would like to update the OS from 10.4.7 to the most current ( mainly in order to view my videos that can only open in Quicktime 7.3. I can't currently do this without updating.) The problem is, if I update from 10.4.7 my Pro Tools software has all kinds of problems and won't open along with a couple other apps. Is there a way to udpate the OS without messing up programs? Or is it easier to uninstall Pro Tools, upgrade, then reinstall it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I would update your OS, but first use Carbon Copy Cloner (note this app is free and backs up your drive, link below) to backup your entire drive onto an external drive; so if you are not happy you can bring your Mac back to just how it was before... besides I'ld hope ProTools or Apple will put out an update soon.

You cant upgrade to the latest at one hit. You have to go in order. So for example, let's say you wanted 10.4.11 you would have had to have installed 10.4.1 and do the upgrades all the way up to 10.4.11 in order.

I use 10.4.11 and am not trying to go further because I have an old G4 so I really haven't kept up to date with what version is the latest but let's say it's 10.5.10 than you will go 10.5.1, .2, .3, .4 all the way up to .10 using software update.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
