An environmentally-friendly washing machine that cleans clothes without detergent will be launched next year.

The WasH20 should be in UK shops early next year. The WasH20 passes an electric current through the water used in the cycle to create acid and alkaline atoms that take over the role of washing powder, liquid or tablets.

Researchers at the Chinese company Haier claim their invention is greener and cleans around 25 per cent more effectively than current models.

Dr Anthony Kucernak, a reader in physical chemistry at Imperial College London, said: "It will probably work to a certain extent, but I'd be sceptical about claims that it cleans more effectively than detergent.

They're using silver in clothing to help keep it cleaner without washing.

just don't wash your clothes....solves 2 problems at once...first..it's good for the planet (no wasted water or nasty detergent) and second it keeps people from asking you questions....you stink too much for anyone to want to come within 10 feet of you

Three years ago, Haier produced the first such washing machine in the world, acquiring 32 proprietary patents for its new offerings.

But there has been mounting difficulty in selling the washers, as people can’t believe clothes can be washed without detergent.

My mistake, I guess the Silver is marketed as a disinfectant, not detergent free:
