While I am no expert re: PC's/laptops I do deal extensively w/ industrial scale systems (e.g., PLC's, HMI's, etc.) as a PM. I deal w/ Allen-Bradley, Honeywell Mitsubishi, Yokogawa and most every major manufacturer of industrial electronic equipment. While these systems are designed for 24/7 industrial operation (not less than 8000 hr's. per year) under grueling environments the OEM's point out very clearly in their literature (fine print) that continuous operation will shorten the life of any electronic device under extensive and/or extreme use (e.g., time, temperature, etc.). I have debated warranties more times than I can count. Most particularly CRT's. It seems to me that our home towers/laptops are not designed for abusive industrial use.
A thought to consider.
I shut down daily.... a personal preference. Heat is a certain villain and I would expect that continuous operation of a computer will shorten the life of any computer.
Happy trails.... ProEd
