Thunderbird supports using POP and IMAP mail servers for fetching/reading new messages.

POP Download:
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 4:55 pm
Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)
Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on
Disable POP
Enable POP for all mail should work to download all mail to TB.

Neil: Didn't I just say that in my post? All mail in GMail has to be marked unread or go to Settings:
POP Download:
