OPERATING SYSTEM (OS):

- Vista Business
- ERROR: Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. Please see the event log for details or contact your administrator.
- No recent crashes.
- No new software installed; but installation issue detailed out below.

Detailed Overview of Issue:

I am an IT Assistant for a not-for-profit organization. Within the last 2-3 months, we placed an order for 8 new laptops to be delivered. They are Sony VIAOs (VGN-C290; which subsequently aren't available for purchase when I looked for drivers this morning.) They came with Vista Business installed.

Originally we did not want to migrate to Vista just yet, and our original plan was to format the laptops with a fresh install of WinXP Professional. We had success in doing this with Dell desktops earlier in the year. The problem we ran across with the VIAOs is that once you install XP Pro, you cannot install any drivers (originals or updates) because they are Vista-specific only. Of course, there were no XP drivers for a machine that came with Vista pre-installed already.

We then decided that we would need to make the upgrade to Vista anyway, so we were going to keep this batch of laptops with Vista. So we were going to try to put Vista back on this first "out-of-the-box" VIAO, but in doing so we noticed two issues:

1) The laptops did not come with a Vista installation CD.
2) Neither did the Dell desktops.

However, the Dell desktops did come with a CD that is a Windows Anytime Upgrade CD. We tried installing Vista over XP on the VIAO, but had a problem with the original license, because we were told it was already in use (from the original Vista on the VIAO).

After calling Microsoft and explaining the situation, they were able to activate our license on this laptop. We proceeded with upgrading all our software, and moving forward towards Vista laptops.

Our next issue (and this is the reason for this thread), is that upon startup, and logging in on our network, we find that users (any non-admin users) cannot login without the error message stated above.

After searching online for a solution, and only finding the error linked to non-network users, we tried powering up another laptop in the original eight that were purchased. Every other laptop will log in the user with no instance of the error and no temporary profile is needed.

We assume that the laptop that we tried to put XP Pro on and then back to Vista again has the issue. What we don't know is how to resolve the issue.

I tried this morning to install original drivers from the Sony website with no success. I'm at my wits' end and really have no other ideas on what could be the cause.

Any help or nudges in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

this is PURE GUESSING....but....log on to the problem machine as an administrator then right click on the C drive and check the security tab....is the "everyone" group there? does it have read/write permissions to the C drive? if the everyone group isn't there...add it and make sure that it's got read/write permissions...also add your domain users group with the same permissions...then try logging on as a regular domain user

Everyone group was not there. Added it. When I clicked OK, the following exceptions were noted:

C:\Boot - access denied
C:\Bootmgr - access denied
C:\hiberfil.sys - used by another process
C:\pagefile.sys - used by another process
C:\Program Files - access denied
C:\Windows - access denied

Rebooted the laptop, tried to login as a network user and ... still receive the error of user profile was not loaded correctly. :)
