I have free aol mail. It stopped working yesterday. I can get the home page, but when I try and sign into my mail, I get "COFE 1700", What is this? How do I fix it?

I hope that by now your email has started working. However, there are several people in the aol forums reporting the same issue. To save you some time I'll repost here what I found:

1. Go to the main AOL menu at http://www.aol.com

2. On the upper right side, click on the words "Sign In" (above the Mail icon). This should take you to a new AOL Portal sign-in screen.

3. After you have signed in, click on the Mail icon.

Try logging on to Help Pages instead of the Technical Support Board, then in the top right hand corner there's a tiny log in. Once your logged on, you can click on Get your AOL email. works for me, but I'm in the UK!

Usually when you get that message the AOL server is down, or is having issues. The best work around are trying either the Canada or UK servers. It'll look a little different than what you're used to, but should work.

Hi - I am R2D2Op - I have had the COFE 1700 error for months, and AOL does not try to help resolve the problem.
I have 2 machines, one I call Desktop and one I call Notebook. They have the same OS and are linked by a router to broadband where I use FireFox to access AOL.com to get my mail.

One day, I did something on my Desktop machine that had to do with the "IEKey" that FireFox offered. For some reason, probably the sound "ActiveX", I decided I did not want the IE in my AOL. I don't know what I did, but I got the opposite of the results that I wanted.

On my Desktop machine, I ALWAYS get the 'COFE1700' error (after I am into aol.com) when I try to access my mail.
But, if I click on the "IEKey" before I sign in to my aol account, I have no problem getting my mail.

On my other machine, the Notebook, I had exactly the same original setup with FireFox-AOL as was on the Desktop before I messed with it. I can get my mail with the normal AOL offer OR with the "IEKey".

My conclustion is that I did something to my FireFox on my Desktop machine that CAUSED me to suffer the COFE1700 problem. I am not skilled enough to compare my FireFox on the Desktop to the FireFox on the Notebook, but I am trying now to get hold of a person I think can solve my problem with FireFox.

This discussion is really meant to be relevant to persons using FireFox, but it may be a clue to one of the other folks who have the problem to help them resolve it. If they do, I hope they post their findings here at GeeksToGo.
