I need to buy a new laptop for my daughter and am trying to choose between 2 models with the same spec. (HP Core Duo, 1 gb ram, 80gb hard drive) with one having Windows basic and the other having premium at an extra cost of £50.

Can anyone advise if, firstly, 1gb of ram is enough for Vista as some commentators have said 2gb is needed, and, secondly, is Premium worth the extra outlay? Does it have any benefits in the real world? I have Windows Business on my office laptop and have been underwhelmed by what it does and annoyed by the number of times the machine hangs. Would the Basic version be simpler and less prone to problems?

Any advice gratefully received.

Vista Premium is a lot better. I had basic and it just feels striped down. Basic looks like crap compared to premium to also. Also with Premium you will more likely have less problems because of all of the advanced trouble shooting stuff and network finder.

Comparison Table:

As you can see Basic has a lot of things stripped of it.

As for the system requirements for Basic and others: http://www.microsoft...quirements.mspx

Edit: You should be good with the RAM because I have 2GB and Vista only uses like 50%-75% of it at start up. It may be a little slower but if you have an extra slot for RAM open you can upgrade it easily; also RAM has gone down on cost.

Microsoft caves in to Windows XP demands
Microsoft is extending the time it will allow original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and retail outlets to sell PCs with Windows XP as customers continue to balk on upgrading to Windows Vista.

also don’t forget you will have to buy software like an office program, unless you use the free one like Open Office, windows notepad and wordpad are very basic.

I would use 2gig of Ram

Thanks for the replies - very helpful. Will go with Premium - tempted to stay with XP but my daughter will see that as old technology!
