Be aware that some applications (usually older versions) won't work under Vista even though they run fine on XP.

That aside, if you have two versions of Windows installed, you have to install applications onto BOTH Windows partitions (as though you were installing the application on to two separate computers) if you want to use that application in both XP and Vista. That's because the application's installer has to copy some support files to the Windows folder, and on your PC there are two Windows folders so you have to install twice. This from Microsoft:

"Installing Programs on More Than One Operating System
If you are installing programs on more than one operating system, you have to treat each operating system as a separate entity. Any programs and drivers that you want to use must be installed under each operating system under which you want to use it. For example, if you want to use Microsoft Word on the same computer under both Windows 98 and Windows XP, you have to start Windows 98 and install Microsoft Word, and then, you have to restart your computer under Windows XP and reinstall Microsoft Word."

Although the above refers to Windows 98/Windows XP, the principal applies equally to Windows XP/Windows Vista, with the additional consideration (as I mentioned earlier) that some XP applications may not run on Vista anyway.
