Dear chiko3, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

A few things I want to mention to you. :)

Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)
Boot mode: Normal

Thanks for the information in your last post, but (just so you are aware of it), from your last post the above is not the full header in the HijackThis log you provided.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 1:38:59 PM, on 21/01/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)
Boot mode: Normal

The above is an example of the full header I would like to see in future HijackThis posts from you. :)
********************************

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [287428cb] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\tgwhetyo.dll",b

Do not touch the above line at this time. However, I want to show you that the file changes in the above HijackThis entry. This is from post #14 in your thread and in the next quote:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [287428cb] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\laruxlkq.dll",b

Here is the same HijackThis entry in post #6 of your thread. Just be aware that the file may change on every reboot of your pc. It could be a "critical" factor in a future post that I will give you.
**********************************

I am still gathering information on your computer system, that is why I want you to run another computer scanner program. I will also ask you to restart your pc and provide you with a new HijackThis log. :)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your

Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
*****************************

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log. :)

Dear chiko3, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Please unintall the following programs from your "Add or Remove programs" list.

The following are optional uninstalls

The QuickTime Player is a legitimate program, but may interfere with your Real time player, WinAmp player and Windows media player. I suggest you uninstall the following program:

QuickTime

(Note: The following programs below probably caused your computer to be infected.)

LimeWire is a Peer to Peer (P2P) file-sharing client. Note - as with all P2P sharing programs they are susceptible to various forms of malware". That is LimeWire is a program that can be used as a vehicle for downloading spyware on to your computer system.

Uninstall the following program through Add/Remove programs:

LimeWire and/or LimeShop (in your case, LimeWire 4.14.8)

Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of.

Uninstall the following program through Add/Remove programs:

Kazaa (in your case, Kazaa Lite K++ v2.4.3)
**********************

Dear chiko3, I would like you to edit your "registry settings", but before you do that, I want you to make a back up copy of your "registry" in case something goes wrong. Here is how this is done:

Back up your current registry

1) Click on the Start button.

2) From the menu that appears, choose Run.

3) In the window that appears, there is a text area labeled Open. In that area, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks").

4) Click the OK button (or hit the Enter or Return key on your keyboard).

5) The Registry Editor window should open.

6) If My Computer is not highlighted, click on it once so that it is highlighted.

7) On the menu bar, click on Registry and then click on Export Registry File.

8) The Export Registry File window will appear. In the Save In drop-down box at the top, choose Desktop.

9) In the File Name box at the bottom, type "backup" (without the quotation marks), then click the Save button.

10) A backup copy of the entire registry will now be saved to your desktop in case something goes wrong.

Notes:

* To restore the registry from the backup file you made, follow the same steps as above, but in step 2 choose Import Registry File instead of Export Registry File. Or, alternatively, you could double-click on the backup file on the desktop and answer Yes when it asks if you want to import the information into the registry.
* Once you've made changes to the registry and you are sure that you no longer need the backup file you made, simply delete it from the desktop.

See the following link: http://helpdesk.umd....ndows_2000/555/. Pay attention to the following sections: Starting the Registry Editor and Backing Up the Registry.
**************************

Edit your registry

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

I am not happy about this information. Do you have a "legitimate" copy of windows xp. I am looking at your log and you don't have windows xp service pack 2 installed on your computer. However, I want to get your computer spyware free before you can install Windows XP service pack 2 on your computer. I therefore have to know if your windows xp software is legitimate.

You may want to visit this web site: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ to find out.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Please uninstall the following programs from your "Add or Remove programs" list.

The following are optional uninstalls

The QuickTime Player is a legitimate program, but may interfere with your Real time player, WinAmp player and Windows media player. I suggest you uninstall the following program:

QuickTime

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{1919063C-1778-4BB7-B355-4C5B2FB6118A}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{1919063C-1778-4BB7-B355-4C5B2FB6118A}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=-

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".

Please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.
**************************************

Please restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1919063C-1778-4BB7-B355-4C5B2FB6118A} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmnnk.dll (file missing)

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you fix these item/items:

If you choose to remove QuickTime, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Delete the following file/files marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmnnk.dll

Delete the following folder/folders marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP <-- (Do not delete the temp folder, just "all the files inside the temp folder".)

Optional folder/folders marked in blue to be deleted (if they exist):

If you uninstalled QuickTime you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\Program Files\QuickTime

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer and run the Deckard's System Scanner (DSS). When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.[/list]
In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

OK, computer seems to be running a little faster upon startup. Though on restarting the computer (after the regedit), it again asked me for the password, luckily I seem to have worked out how to get around that.

I uninstalled Quicktime too, and, apart from that, none of the files existed in the HJT checklist. There was also no sign of pmnnk (the one that I couldn't delete ages ago).

Here's the DSS scan report:

Dear chiko3, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Thank you for the information from your last two posts to this thread.

Let me ask you a question. When I asked you to edit your registry in my last two posts and when you restarted your computer, you are asked for a password, and you get around this by booting your computer in safe mode and choosing the option "Last Known Good Configuration". Is this correct (please explain in detail)?
***************************

Here is what concerns my about your computer system from the logs you last posted:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\AFBB3F.EXE

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"= msv1_0 C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmnnk.dll

This leads me to believe that their still might be some kind of virus still on your computer system, however, I am going to have you run another program to see if we can get rid of this virus.
****************************

System Drive C: has 1.07 GiB (less than 15%) free.

Is the above quote true?

How many Gigabytes is your hard drive (please explain in detail)?

How much hard drive space is used up and how much hard drive space is free on Drive C: (please explain in detail)?
***************************

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

OK, I'll do everything in order...

First, I never actually got into Safe Mode - I got around the password thing by pressing f8, which brought me to a menu where booting in Safe Mode was an option, but I went with the "last known configuration" one. It skipped the password screen and thankfully went straight to the desktop, which remained as it was before.

Second, I have a 73.3g, of which - yes - only 1.4g is free. Though this is mainly due to the ripping of music onto the hard drive (I host a radio programme), which doesn't usually stay there long. I don't really download stuff, so I have no need for a lot of room.

Last, here's the ComboFix report:

Dear chiko3, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full diagnostic tests on your computer here: http://www.pcpitstop...top/default.asp. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the left-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post it here for me in a reply to this post.

Restart your computer and run the Deckard's System Scanner (DSS). That is, I would like to see both files associated with this scan.

Restart your computer, and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

rambro :)
