this song was inspired by the film of the same name....starring jane fonda and Michael Sarrazin.......film 1969...song 8 years later..
The title "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" is a novel by Horace McCoy published in 1935. It was later made as a film starring Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin and Gig Young in 1969. It's about a dance marathon that was common place in the depression years where couples would dance for weeks at a time for a cash prize. The song refers to a dance marathon.
