Not really sure what's wrong. Maybe nothing's wrong. Heh. Uhm, I've just noticed that my computer runs more slowly, and there're alot more processes running than normal. I checked Windows Task Manager and noticed that svchost.exe is running in greater numbers than normal (usually only a handful, right?). Now there's a dozen independant processes of it running. Also, every once in a while I get an error at startup. Honestly, I don't remember what the error is (funny that I'm asking for help with so little information), but if I get it again I'll be sure to post it here. I realize this post is really vague, but if anyone knows anything about Vista, I'd appreciate some help. Even if it's just some good "house-keeping" practices.

What I've done so far:
*I ran each file running in Windows Task Manager through processlibrary.com. Some processes it didn't register, so I ran them through other sites. For the most part, everything looked fine.
*I've downloaded HijackThis. Never used it before, but I ran it and didn't see anything suspicious in the log. Again, not a practiced user.
*I found a Security Task Manager at neuber.com, though it wasn't free. I'm not looking to buy any software unless it's vital.
*Ran through installed programs in Control Panel. For the most part, everything looks OK, though alot of the pre-installed software begs to be uninstalled. Some of the software looked peculiar, and if anyone wants a list of installed programs, I'll definately provide (trying to keep this post shorter for right now).
*I'm a longtime fan of McAfee's Stinger program. Background-running anti-virus programs always seemed more hassel and less help. But if anyone has a good suggestion for one, I'll definately hear you out.

I'm somewhat knowledgeable with computers, but definately not as much as many of you. So anything anyone has to offer is probably more than I've thought of. Again, sorry for the vague description. Thanks.

Hello scuttstorm and welcome to Geeks to Go!

To start, let's eliminate the possibility that it is malware. I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post a HiJackThis Log in THAT forum. If you are unable to run and/or post a HJT log, then post that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Regards,

Ax
