I had bought a Dell XPS 400 in December of 2005, with Windows XP Media Center. Just after my Dell service expired, I started experiencing problems....which ultimately led to the Blue Screen of Death issues that were described throughout this thread.
The last thing that I saw when it was working was a McAfee update and a Windows update......perhaps a deadly combo.
After calling Dell on a number of occasions, and searching all over for help I got frustrated to the point of giving up for a while.
I basically shelved my Dell for well over a year, using an older machine for that time. I have just started a business, and we decided we needed to try to revive my nice machine.
The other day, I came across this forum and this thread. I now have a working Dell thanks to your great and patient postings.
Ultimately, it was going into the Dell Recovery console by pressing Ctrl and F-11 that brought it back to life. Such a simple fix, that Dell people did not even get close to telling me to try.
Thank you so much for helping me through this potentially expensive and very tedious process!
It is St. Patrick's Day and I can't help but feel lucky as can be to have gotten my machine operating again.
I think I'll go have a beer now, to celebrate.
Thanks again for your amazing help!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if anyone will see this, but I just ran across the link to this post on my husband's laptop (which I had been using when working on my system during the described problem). Thought I would check in and was tickled to see the posts from havoc100 and stixpos. It was all a very frustrating problem, but thanks to Tallin and Wannabe1 we worked it out and it looks like we helped some others along the way.
Since replacing the nvidia graphics card and doing the system restore, I have never had another problem (crosses fingers). Added some additional memory later for good measure. Have reloaded all of my old programs wih no issues and there have been no problems at all running WOW, etc.
Wannabe1, if ur out there still, you're still my hero for your kind patience and willingness to share your knowledge.

Hi
I had a bsod with the STOP:0x0000008E error also. I tried all of the ideas above to no avail. I recieved the bsod error whenever i shutdown or restarted the computer. Eventually i noticed that the error didnt occur when i shutdown in safe mode, so i used msconfig to work out what was being loaded when the error occurred. I did this firstly by not loading any startup options and restricting startup services to windows only.
From this i found that the error had something to do with loading avg. Intermittently the bsod appeared still and found that this was reoccurring after
running an antivirus scan.
I uninstalled avg and got rid of the error, i loaded avast and ran a scan and the error came back. Running a full system scan with avast revealed a trojan which avg did not pick up. it had infected the system file checker system file and avast deleted it on rebooting of the system.
After this i was able to run a full system scan and reboot without anymore bsod messages. I hope this helps some of you.
