What in the heck happened? When I started to get off my laptop today it had new updates available. So I let it install the updates ( there were 6 of them). After they were finished I turned off my laptop. Well when I went to get back on, it showed configuring settings. Well after a few minutes later this little message popped up and said something about the log in was wrong or couldn't log in, there was a little box had ok. I clicked it thinking ok I'll turn it off and back on. Well now it just showing logging off. I've always installed new updates on my desktop never had a problem. I thought updates were suppose to be good Now I'm afraid to turn off my desktop I don't know what went wrong. I just bought this around Jan 8. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the time Stephanie
Hope this is the right info for you.

Hello, and welcome to Geeks To Go.
May I ask what anti-virus program you use?
This was an issue with norton 2003, and Windows XP.

Is there any type of error messege, file name or any thing specific?
Please go into the Event Viewer and see what errors occurred at the time you get this error message.
Click START-->RUN and type EVENTVWR.MSC and hit ENTER.
Look under SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS for items with RED X's that happened at the SAME time as your problem...List them here.

I can't get in the start menu at all. When I turn it back on it starts up shows this real fast dell bios at the very bottom it shows something about f2 and f12. This blank black page flashs up quick with a little white line blinking in the left hand top corner. Then it shows resuming windows ( pretty quick). And last it shows logging off with this little circle continusly running clockwise. It sits like that til it cuts itself off. When I turn it back on after it cuts itself off it's like a rerun. I don't see no kinda error or specific messages when this happens.

Aw man.
You can repeatedly press F12 while the machine is booting up to see if you can do a repair installation.

Hmm repair installation eh What's that and How do I do it. Will it tell me the specific things I need to do? What if this isn't the problem, would it do any further damage if I do this. Do I need a disk for this?

Uh the aw man is that more like aw man can't get the start menu up or aw man she's destroyed this thing? :)

What the repair does is rewrite the files to your operating system. It does not cause you to lose data, or installed programs.
There should be prompts for your input, make sure that you select Repair, or R.
If you do not have the repair option, you will have to choose if you want to start from scratch. (losing all of your data, and having to reinstall your programs).
The recovery partition is part of your hard drive. You should not need a disc.
If you press F12 and it is just a boot order menu than I am wrong.

Please use the Operating system disc.
See if it offers a repair option.

I am sorry,
When you start the computer:
  • press F12.
  • Select Boot order.
  • set your CD/DVD drive as the first boot device.
  • restart the computer with the disc in the drive.
