Hi,

My daughter has an Acer laptop that runs Windows Vista. We have had it for over 6 months with no problems. The other day when she attempted to start it up it went through the motions...it comes to the blue screen that shows windows starting up. It then showed "configuring updates" with the little circle turning to show it was working. After about 2 minutes it then says "shutting down". Once it shuts down it begins the process all over again...restarting....configuring updates...shutting down. It nevers gets to the desktop page at all. In order to stop this process and shut it down all the way I have to hold the power button down for a couple of seconds for a full manual power off.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you,
Stephanie :)

Hello, and welcome to Geeks To Go.
A few simple steps first,
While starting your computer tap the F8 key once every second during the memory count up, or during the system splash screen where you see the system maker's name (HP, COMPAQ, DELL....etc.)
This will result in a text based menu. Use the cursor/arrow keys to navigate to SAFE MODE and hit enter.
Does the problem occur in safe mode?

Thank you for responding.

That doesn't work either. Since I shut down the computer by holding the button in for a few seconds to force a manual power off it does bring me to the "safe mode" page on start up. I have attempted to boot up in Safe Mode and it still gets stuck in the "configuring updates" loop.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Stephanie :)

Hello decockney...

Download VistaRecovery.ISO and burn it to a cd as an ISO image. You may need a burning tool like ISO Recorder to do this...be sure to get the version for the operating system you'll be creating the disk on.

Boot to this CD (choose the Repair option) and use it to run a System Restore to a date before the updates installed. You should see updates listed in the restore point list. The update that's apparently causing this is KB947172, so you need to go back to before that one...probably to about 02-12 or 02-13.

Once the machine is running again, install This Microsoft Patch. Then manually install the updates one at a time and they should complete successfully. After you get past installing KB947172, Automatic Updates should work just fine.

Note: This disk is quite slow...be patient. There are no Vista installation files on this disk...it will not help with system file problems.

You can follow a thread with the same problem here.

I copied the disk and ran it. It went through the process of "fixing" and then it said "finished". I clicked the finished button and it re-started but with the same result. I have tried to run the disk again and it won't run. I never saw an option for system restore to try to restore to an earlier time.

I was able to do F9 and get to the system restore point from there and log in normally. I did attempt to download the patch and I am getting error 0x8007000d "the data is invalid". I went online to microsoft and this error cannot be found :)

I have disabled automatic updates. I am not sure how I am going to intall this patch so that I can continue getting updates without system problems.

Thanks,
Stephanie

The same thing happened to me, and I asked around the internet and was advised to make sure that the HeatSync (or however you spell it) fan over my CPU was in right. It worked fine after I tightened it. I advise you not to try unless you know what I'm talking about though. I'm not even 100% sure on what I'm talking about!

Edit: After reading that over, I think our problems may have been diferent... it still might be worth a try if worst comes to worst.

I had the same problem and fixed it buy booting to the restoe partiton and selecting system restore. It seemed to be a bad install of the vista updates so i restored to before that then updated again and my computer works great now....good luck.
