In Vista I tried to compress disk D. The first time it told me I needed administrative rights. So. I rebooted to "safe mode" and did it. It allowed me but it doesn't seem to have done anything. Then when I rebooted into normal mode, I tried again. This time it let me, but again, it didn't compress. So, two questions:

1) How do I boot directly into administrator mode--or is it like I did by going into safe mode?

2) How do I compress to make it take?

THANKS ! :)

Hello, and welcome to Geeks To Go.
You may only compress a disc if it uses the NTFS.
Disc D may not be using NTFS.
Right click on disc D and select properties.
Look at the file system being used.

If you are trying to compress certain files/folders you could use WinRAR or WinZip.
