need help - think i have a virus

one year old HP desktop with vista. started getting excessive popups, then a few days later all the icons disappeared from the desktop (clicking right didn't bring up a drop down box), now the icons appear but every 30 seconds or so they flashh off and then back on. If you click on the icons, the hourglass appears for a few seconds but nothing happens. help!
