We want to monitor a Linux server for hard drive failure, free space running out etc. and have it send email warnings to our I.T. group. What would be the best program or method to use for this? Thank you.....

You might check out Big Brother. I know it used to be free and I think you can still get that version. Swatch allows you to watch the log messages and notify you, which is where the hard drive errors are.

If you want to use a free Open-Source Monitoring tool, you HAVE to check these following sites:

http://www.nagios.org
http://www.zabbix.org
http://www.groundworkopensource.com/

These three are the best in OpenSource Network Monitoring solutions, you'll be able to monitor everything in the network, from Net usage, to process availability ...

If you opt for Nagios, go see : http://www.centreon.com/ for a good frontend ...
