Hey, I figured this was better posted in this section as it's more to do with Vista troubleshooting than Networking in general.

I recently bought a pretty powerful PC with Windows Vista Business pre-installed, and since that start, used it to share documents and media with the other Windows XP based PC's in my house.

Here's the configuration - 'C:\Shared\Media' was shared as 'Media' with full control permissions.
- 'C:\Shared\Docs' was shared as 'Docs' with full control permissions.
Both were access solely by one XP SP2 machine, but I was preparing to set up another PC to access these shares. The shares were accessed via the PC name, not IP.

After I installed SP1 on the Vista PC, my shares stopped working! Infact, I can't even ping the machine anymore, though I did have success ONCE using ping, but only whilst pinging the IP address. I understand that SP1 'improves' sharing, but would this cause the malfunction? I've seen a few others having the problem on the web. I made sure all the appropriate services were running, took a look through the Windows Firewall config, etc - no success.

The PC runs Norton 360 v2, the standard Windows Firewall and Defender, and only has local-only network access (configured via router), and I have taken steps to ensure that it is malware free (Scanned with Norton 360, and ClamWin Portable).

Does anyone have any ideas?

Addendum:

Tried re-installing network adaptor, set my IP address to be fixed. No change.

Addendum II:

Problem fixed - it was NOT Vista SP1, it was caused by an installation which coincided with the SP1 install, but I one I disregarded. By default Norton 360 v2 firewall will block Windows file sharing.

Solution: Turn this off by entering preferences, open the Norton firewall configuration, go to the 'Rules' tab, and search for the 'Block Windows File Sharing' rule, which has an 'incoming' connection symbol. Deselect this and restart the PC.
