My PC just recently developed a problem with Vista. I just installed a new SATA drive with few difficulties, but now when I boot my computer, Vista pops up with the "Found New Hardware" window and announces that it needs to install software drivers for:

An unknown device;
my Pioneer DVD;
my new hard drive; and
my USB receiver, which it asks for 3 times (probably because I've plug it into as many USB ports).

If I click the "Locate and Install software"option, Vista won't find it. I read somewhere that the solution was to direct the search to the Windows/System directory, but that didn't work.

If I click the "Ask me again later" option, the hardware works fine, but Vista will repeat the process on the next boot up.

If I click "Don't show this message again for this device," I'm screwed because the device will quit working -- no mouse, no new hard drive, no CD.

I haven't seen any potential solutions elsewhere so I hope someone here can help.

thanks... :)

My System is homebuilt:

Vista Home Premium 32 bit, Service Pack 1
Asus P5K-E motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU
4 gigs of Corsair Ram
GeForce 7950 PCI graphics card
3 Hard Disk Drives -- 2 SATA, 1 IDE
Logitech USB cordless mouse
Pioneer DVR 212D SATA

Hey LTDigital,

Wow. That can get annoying!

I have a solution that could possibly resolve your issue. You may want to try booting into Safe Mode [see below on how to] and then try to install the the new hardware.

My reason for saying this is because there could possibly be some conflicting hardware/software that is not allowing Windows Vista to execute the command to its completion.

######################################################################

To Get Into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
######################################################################

Let me know what happens.

Thanks for the advice. I tried that, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I did, however, partially solve the problem, or at least I think so. I found a forum where they were talking about the USBSTOR.inf file. I downloaded a copy from the site and upon rebooting, when Vista asked to install drivers for my USB receiver, it suceeded. That's one window that no longer pops up. Now if someone can tell me what .inf files I need for my new hard drive and my existing Pioneer DVD burner, I think that would solve everything.

thanks for the help.
