Hi,
I have an EI 3103 laptop, Intel Celeron M440. I was using Itunes the other day and sound was perfect then my pc froze, when I rebooted it the sound icon had a red cross and "no audio output device is installed" came up, my drivers are still installed and i even reinstalled them just incase (realtek high definition) also did two system restores and updated with windows update. This isnt the first time this has happened, it did when i first bought it but really don't remember how i fixed it. Another thing, when i went to Device Manager the option for sound did not exist, i used the Add Hardware application which worked but all i get is the yellow exclamation mark saying "this device cannot start (code 10)" on realtek audio. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Have you given this a try?

Go into device manager and select sound, then right click and select properties.
Then select the driver tab from the top and click on uninstall (advanced) and follow through the instructions.
Reboot your system and allow windows to find new hardware and install the driver. (make sure your connected to the net for windows to download driver

Hope this helps

Hi, well firstly my sound did not disappear due to an installation of a driver as I have looked through my updates and do not see any audio related driver updates. Secondly, the device manager method did not work, I even downloaded the Everest application and it does not tell me what soundcard I have as it is as if all my audio does not exist.

I lost my sound a while back and found this item (in qote box) on another forum. It worked for me.
Before trying this, back up your registry!

The registry entry that controls wheter or not windows vista enforces signed
audio drivers is in the following path (use regedit to examine/change it).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Audio

And the entry is called

DisableProtectedAudioDG

When it is set to 1, the system does not check for signed drivers and the
protected content refuses to play.

So I only changed the value to 0, and restarted windows, now Vista does
enforce the protected audio and my protected music plays !!! (my normal music
also plays).

Be careful though, if your audio drivers are not signed, then, changing this
value to 0 will probably disable your music playback (not 100%).

So if your problem is that you don't get music at all, then try setting that
to 1, but if your problem is like mine (no protected music and you do have
signed drivers) then set the value to 0.

I hope this information is useful to any of you.
