i have a new toshiba satellite x205 gaming laptop (i got it for christmas), and it just started acting wierd.

the computer boots up fine, but when i get to the desktop page, there is nothing there, except for a window that is called "my downloads." i can navigate away from the page and get to a desktop page, and all other things in my computer, but there is no desktop background, start bar, side bar, or anything else on my desktop. it happened after i downloaded new updates that it asked me to when i shut it down once. then, when i booted up my computer the next day, it was like this. i even went onto the control panel to see if i can change the settings for my start bar, but the page for that option won't open up.

please help, its been like this for about 3 weeks and i have no idea what to do. :)

Hello JNard08...

Were the updates Windows uppdates?

Try running a system restore to a date before the updates installed. In Vista, you will that to select a checkbox in the System Restore window to show restore points older than 5 days.

On the first System Restore window, select "Choose a different restore point" and click Next. Then, on the next window, you should see the checkbox to "Show restore points older than 5 days".

Creating a restore point does just that...it creates a restore point you can restore to later. It doesn't allow you to choose what to go back to.

If you don't see the checkbox, then you don't have any restore points older than 5 days.

If we can't roll it back, look in "Programs and Features" from Control Panel and try removing the updated that installed just before the problem began. Do them one at a time until the problem goes away...the last one you removed will be the one causing the problem, so write down the KB###### as you remove them so you can note which one you don't want to install again.

Sound like a malware-related problem, I suggest you to make a post in the Malware Removal forum for further assistance.
