Hi,

What are the procedures to delete Windows 98 & Internet Explorer 6, and install Windows XP & Internet Explorer 7?

I have a Pentium III, 333megaHz, 1024Ram, and 10GB hard drive with Internet Explorer 6.

One day the Internet connection just crashed. IE opens, but cannot display web page /connect to Internet. I checked all Internet setting and are fine. I have tried CCleaner, malware & spyware scans, and non were working. I installed the new Firefox, but it still said cannot connect to Internet. All other programs/files/local network are working fine.

I use cable modem and a router with 2 other computers (1 LAN & 1 wireless) connected to the router, and they work fine.

I am now wondering if it could all be fixed by deleting the entire Windows 98 & Explorer 6, and install a new Windows XP operation system with Explorer 7 because when I went to MS Support, most of their Explorer 6 & Windows 98 Q&A have been deleted ... looks like they are mostly concerm / support with XP & Explorer 6 or later versions.

Thanks.

It'll fix it but the computer isn't very fast, XP probably won't be all that responsive and you'll spend more time waiting for it to do stuff.
XP comes with IE6 as standard.
The thing is if the issue is with the computer hardware itself, it won't matter what you install it still wouldn't work. Your best bet is to replace the network/wireless card first.

Neil,
The network card is working properly because the “OLD” computer is connected to a router with a “NEW” computer. I can access/delete/install/edit files & information thru the network from using the “new” computer.

I think my best bet is to COMPLETELY delete Windows 98 & the OLD IE 6 and install the new Windows XP with the Internet Explorer.

I insert the XP disc, but it said my version of 98 do not support the upgrade … so how do I delete the 98 (or just clean out the hard drive completely) and install the XP.

Thanks.

Why don't you just reinstall 98?
