I feel the need to start by telling you to log on to a regular user....

I would give this a shot:

$ sudo apt-get install gcc

Did you install vmware via a .deb (synaptic package manager)?

Have you considered Qemu/KVM? It is the supported virtual machine software for Ubuntu.

I use Qemu/KVM. From what I read about both Qemu/KVM is bit harder to set up but more configurable and vmware is considered to be more "user friendly". I have not seen both to compare so I couldn't tell you which one is better.

As far as printers go, Lexmark has the worst Linux support by a long shot. In Linux it is a paperweight.

Let me know which one you want to go with.

Edit:

Just did a search for vmware in the repositories:

jordan@Einstein:~$ apt-cache search vmware
mdetect - mouse device autodetection tool
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse - X.Org X server -- VMMouse input driver to use with VMWare
xserver-xorg-video-vmware - X.Org X server -- VMware display driver
libview-dev - VMware's Incredibly Exciting Widgets
libview2 - VMware's Incredibly Exciting Widgets
libview2-dbg - VMware's Incredibly Exciting Widgets

I would have a look at xserver-xorg-input-vmware and xserver-xorg-input-vmouse in the Synaptic package manager.

After double checking it looks like vmware will need to be compiled from source. See this guide: http://ubuntuforums....ighlight=vmware.

After seeing another student at my school use VirtualBox that is going to have to be my recommendation. It seems to be a QEMU/KVM with a GUI slapped over top of it. It looked easy to configure and the best part it is official supported by Ubuntu thus has official Ubuntu documentation on how to set it up. You can find that documentation here: https://help.ubuntu....nity/VirtualBox.

Let me know if that works out for you.

This might be a bit late, or it might be helpful: I find Brother to be one of the best printer manufacturers out there, my printer's support page has drivers for a few different types of linux, mac, all Windows variants...

It was as easy as 1 2 3 to set it up on my Ubuntu dual boot.

Cheers

well because i have vmware installed already and im not too fond of having to "dirty" my server with different apps i thought i would try to mess around and see if i could get vmware server working. SO this is what i started with. i simply tried to start it. this is the result

myusername@Server1:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vmware start
Starting VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor failed
Virtual ethernet failed
Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 failed
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background) done
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background) done
NAT service on /dev/vmnet8 failed

so obviously theres something wrong with the install -_-

keep in mind this is vmware SERVER and not PLAYER

now if you can tell me how to get all that it installed off then ill be happy to try the other

Well, I don't have any experience with that software specifically. Check you installation step with this guide: http://ubuntuforums....ighlight=vmware

Also, it is not listed in the guide but with KVM you have to load the virtualization modules into the kernel with the following commands:

sudo modprobe kvm
sudo modprobe kvm-intel

Not sure if something like that is going to be needed with VMWare.
