I was trying to fix my old laptop for personal gain, but I then ran into a problem. After the operating system screen was done loading, I get a message saying unable to read configuration files. Also after I reach the desktop and type in my password, the screen turns white with black dots. I started up in safe mode, and the white screen did not come up. I did a system restore to an earlier date, and the problem seemed to be solved until 30 minutes after fixing all the programs on it. I am using a Gateway Solo 5300 latop with Windows Me. I know this is an old laptop, but I do not have the funds to buy another at the moment. I talked to Gateway , and they said run the restoration disc. Well, I never got the restortaion disc. I looked every where for it. Is there a site I can download the disc? Thank you for your help.

You probably need the correct drivers, especially for the video. See if you can't get them from Gateway. If you can find out what hardware you have you can maybe get it from the makers.

What do you mean drivers? If I needed them, would it still work in safe mode?
