Hi imorrin,
Try this:
1. Right click on your My Computer Icon on your Desktop
2. Select Properties
3. Go to the Advanced Tab
4. Go to Performance and click on Settings
5. Click on Let Windows Choose what is best for my Computer
6. Click Ok
- IMPORTANT
7. Must restart the computer for changes to correct themselves
8. After the restart the bar on the left side should be gone
Post back and let me know if it worked.

No such luck! I had tried that based on other postings. The bar on the bottom pops up right away, but the bar on the side does not appear until the icons show up. Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Hi imorrin
Gerryf who is a moderator here posted this to another user with a very similar problem to yours. Hopefully that will work.

just try right clicking over the left part of your screen that's bothering you and see what options come up. if you're lucky there will be one that can solve your problem.
