Okay, if that's the full wording of the box, I'm pretty sure I know the one you mean. If you disable UAC again, does this error go away? (Just for troubleshooting purposes, I still recommend keeping it on).

As for Rivatuner, it looks like somebody has found a fix here. I don't use the program myself though, so I couldn't vouch for it.

for some reason, that error no longer comes up. i dont know why and i rebooted 3 or 4 more times, but thats a good thing :) and of course i still have uac on. as far as rivatuner, thanks for that link. i went there and used a second option they had which was easier than dealing with the registry and that microsoft program, which was simply to create a task scheduler for it to run at logon. now it doesnt require uac to run. so again thanks for that help.

lastly, choicemail tech support contacted me back regarding my choicemail hanging ever since these freezeups started, and like you said, they too think it has to do with my norton internet security. so im going to log off now and do that reinstall of norton. thanks again.

Well that's great work, I'm glad to hear it.

You just wait till wannabe1 hears that Norton Internet Security was the culprit... :)

And I'm glad those other problems were sorted too. Be sure to post again if there are any further problems.

I'm in a good mood, so we won't go there today.

Glad things appear to be sorted... :)

im glad to report that its been over 24 hours and not a single problem has happened. so it appears that uninstalling and reinstalling my norton did the trick. i want to sincerely thank you both, troy and wannabe1 for the excellent help you have both given me. by process of elimination, it seems we have figured out what the cause of all my trouble was. i always send something by paypal as a thanks to the person who helped me so they can buy a few beers on me, but since both of you helped me, ill send half of that amount to each of you. take care, and again, i thank you both.

Actually I didn't know what your stance was on NIS, so I thought I'd throw it out there as a joke. :)

Yes I also am glad you got it sorted, Louuu. Be sure to head back here if you have any further queries.

hi again. i think i may have spoken too soon when i said i think everything is ok. i am still getting some freezing problems, but not as many as before. also, a new problem that is coming up sometimes is when i open internet exporer to any url page, it freezes and an error box pops up saying windows explorer has stopped working. the 2 options i get are stop the program or wait. if i choose wait, it just stays frozen. if i choose stop, my screen blinks as it shuts off and on and then i can click on any other url again and it will open properly. lastly, once in awhile my screen boots up when i first turn it on into a frozen screen forcing me to reboot. so it looks like my uninstalling norton and reinstalling it didnt really solve the problem.

on a side note, i noticed that after i installed vista service pack one a few days ago, in my windows updates, im now getting xp office updates too?? i dont think i even have xp office or any office installed on my computer. why is windows automatically installing updates for this now? by the way, the freezing of my computer has nothing to do with me installing vista service pack one as this problem was present before i did this.

thanks and ill wait to hear back from you with hopefully some steps or help.

Well one thing that comes to mind...

If you uninstall Norton (and replace it with another anti-virus for temporary troubleshooting purposes), does the problem still happen?

Wannabe1 may have another idea.

Troy

P.S. You can check what programs you have installed on your computer by navigating to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features. Check out if Office is in there.

hi troy and thanks for your reply. as far as office, no i do not have anything under programs and features that says office, xp office, microsoft office or anything with the word office in it. so im just not sure why im getting those updates automatically now??

as far as uninstalling norton completely and using another service temporarily, is there a different step that we can try? i ask this because i actually dont have another virus/firewall program to use and being that ive uninstalled norton and reinstalled it already, i dont know if norton is the actual problem here? ive used norton for many years and never had a problem. also, the freeze ups are random. i could click on my mail and it could happen. or i could just open up explorer or anything else. it seems to be completely random and thats why im thinking that norton couldnt cause these random freeze ups like that? of course, im no expert and i could be wrong here and i definitely value what you say much higher than what i think :) thats why im here trying to get help. let me know what you think, thanks.

Let's take a little closer look at what's going on in there.

Download and run WinAudit on the machine. Save a report in HTML format...there is a tutorial for doing that HERE. It will generate three files...I need only the one named "right.html". Right click on that file, point to "Send to", and choose "Compressed (Zipped) folder". Send me that file attached to a PM.

This is a fairly comprehensive report and will take me a little while to wade through all I want to look at. I'll post back here with anything I find.

Uninstall Bit Tornado and see if the hangs stop.

There are a ton of hanging application errors in your log and they all point to that.

hi again wannabe1. i think the tons of hanging application errors youre seeing is when i close down bit tornado. each time i close the application down that error pops up creating what youre seeing. that has been that way for years and i dont think that is the cause of my problems. i use bit tornado alot to download boxing, mma and wrestling files as im a member of a private sports sharing group. each time i close the file after the download is complete, one of those errors is created. im only telling you this because without me telling you, you would think that could be the cause of the problem im having. like i said above, these errors have been there for years and created for years and i sincerely believe thats not the issue causing my current problem. do you still want me to take it off? let me know, or if not, ill wait to hear what your possible next step might be. thanks again for your great effort.

Ok...back to the logs.

As a side note...the Office updates appear to be directed at MS Works. According to WinAudit you have that installed, right?
