My brother is in the computer industry for a large banking system, and he has not used internet security except whats in XP for 3yrs, NO PROBLEMS. So whats the deal? Are most of these people getting them from sites or downloads or emails? I myself have quit using them for some time now and have had NO problems either. :)

It all depends on what you do on your computer,
Ex- If you don't use the internet, CD's, Floppy Disks, etc. it is near impossible to get an infection...

and other variables that change the possible outcome. (<<I know that sounded extremely nerd-ish)

I would always recommend using anti-virus and firewall...

Being on the internet without protection is just asking for problems. You may have been lucky until now, but that will change.

We highly recommend that everyone use adequate Antivirus Protection and a good Firewall.

I am going to leave this thread open, but remember the rules for this site. Only trained Malware Staff may give advice or recommendations relating to Antivirus/Antimalware software. Any other discussion is fine, but anyone found violating this rule may have their post deleted and be subject to further penalties.

it's my experience that anyone who says they're not running an AV or antimalware package and says they've "got no problems" just don't know they've got problems...there are TONS of things that you can get that you'll never know you have but are sending out all of your information to god knows who...

it's either extremely naive or extremely arrogant (not specifically you..just generally speaking) to think that your surfing habits make you immune to infection...there are so many creative ways to inject stuff onto your computer these days that even going to reputable sites isn't 100% safe anymore...

I agree with the both of you for the most part. You drive enough, odds are, sooner or later you will get into an accident. But my brother does alot of surfing and hasn't had a problem in years. Could be luck :)

Or it could be some form of hidden malware, just capturing all the personal data it wants and sending it off into the unknown... :)

It bewilders me to hear that someone working in a bank can actually use a computer without proper internet security. (I mean no offense :)) Most banks have integrated security softwares and systems that prevent any highly skilled hackers from coming in and stealing their customers' data. Banks hold a large amount of cash reserves, none of them can risk losing some critical data that allows their reserves to flow out unknowingly. Despite the high level of security, many banks still can't prevent data loss from happening, this just shows how scary those hackers are becoming.

No one with a bit of malware knowledge would say that a computer can be used safely without a decent anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. No one knows how smart and sneaky those malware writers are becoming today, even protection software vendors have a hard time keeping up with the updates and patches. Don't underestimate the ability of those malicious Internet users, they are not a bunch of lame kids writing a string of codes and trying to get a laugh out of wreaking a person's computer.

Yes, I do know that. But I thought a bank employee should be well aware of the level of security that should be present on a computer (even if it's a personal one at home)? It just surprises me that your brother can use a computer without Internet security. :)

I really pray that your brother has never done any online commercial stuff with your home computers these years. It's extremely dangerous for a computer to be online without a proper Internet security package. Not having problems doesn't mean a computer isn't compromised. There are some malware out there that don't wreak a system but instead stays inside it like a parasite and steals any information that comes from the infected user. I'm equally shocked that your brother isn't aware of that as a bank employee. :)

He is aware. He has been on the tech side of computing for 20yrs or so. I know your site is in the business to help people, and that is what you see all the time, which is the problems people have. And I assume you do your best to help all these people that come to you. I also want to add that your site is one of the better/best sites for info when the staff and admins get involved with individual problems. I am not trying to turn this into a debate. All I am saying is that neither he or I have had any problems as of yet. The last time I downloaded my 2008 Norton Internet Security I ended up rebuilding my whole operating system, the program itself reacted adversely to my setup for some reason. I deleted it months ago and have had no problems. Thats not saying that there may be something that may have made its way into my computer, but I haven't had any problems with anything. On the other hand I would like your opinion on Vista's internal firewalls and security? And it seems that these other programs feed on the consumers fear of obtaining a virus or malware/spyeware of some sort. Are you telling me that Windows Defender with all the security updates is worthless? :)
