The makers of BitDefender have a removal tool for failed or incomplete removal here:
http://kb.bitdefende...itDefender.html

Scroll down to the section "Uninstalling BitDefender using the uninstall tool" which is approximately halfway down the page.
It also gives instructions on how to download and run this tool.

If your BitDefender included a firewall, please make sure you either install an alternative firewall or enable the built-in Vista firewall.
Do not try to install a different third-party firewall until you've completed the BitDefender removal process.

Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

Good :)
That means, that some toolbar, or add-on is the culprit.
Do you use Google toolbar? It's known for causing problems.
If so, uninstall it, and see, if IE works OK in Full Mode.
If you don't have Google toolbar, restart IE in Full Mode, go Tools>Manage add-ons>Enable or disable add-ons, and disable all add-ons.
Restart IE in Full Mode.
Works OK?
Enable one add-on.
Restart.
Works OK?
Enable next add-on.....and so on.

Right you're. This has been like a disease lately. Drive-by-installs.
Always select custom install, so you know what exactly you're installing.
I've been trying to keep up to date list of those "shame on you" programs, right here:
