Hi
I have vista home basic..
But my internet connection drops often - around 3-4 times per day. Though messenger keeps on working during that, only sites become inaccessible.

Very strange..

I think this started happening when I installed Transcend ram on my HP laptop.. vendor says its compatible though.

Also, sometimes computer freezes on waking up from sleep mode
Plz help

Thanks. :) :)

Huh.....98 computer, USB based dialup...freezes waking from sleep....Sounds to me like you have something using a boatload of resources. You may want to hop over to the malware removal part of the forum and see if you're infected in any way. Also, if you'd ever like a newer computer, dell.com/outlet has some for $200.

Best of luck!

Oh, I saw the 98 in your OS tag and thought that was the one we were working with.
Still, the lag when waking from sleep and the web has me concerned. I would help you further, it's not my place to do so, that's for the staff ^_^

First of all, if it's not laptop, disable all crappy power saving features: sleep, hibernate, etc.
Secondly, are you losing connection, while working on-line, or while computer idle, or in sleep mode?
Did you call your ISP?

Hi
thanks for your replies..
Yes, it is a laptop, and power settings are default which came with it.
Previously there were no problems... following problems started after I added a new 1GB transcend Ram (the old 512MB original compaq ram is still there ) -
1- sometimes laptop freezes on waking up from sleep
2- net connection drops while working online... though the connection status remains Connected and Messengers (yahoo/msn) keep working !!!

plz help... i think it is some computer problem

Are you 100% sure, you added correct RAM?
If so, run memtest: http://www.techspot....topic62524.html

I have no idea..
the vendor said yes its compatible...

My computer performance definitely improved after adding the RAM, but brought these 2 problems..
I cannot remove them as I have paid for it... can this be a problem ?

how much time memtest will take ? is it compulsory to create a CD ?? OR an usb drive works ?

the transcent USB stick is DDR2 PC2 667 hz ?
Should I remove the original one and try ? can 2 different company's ram create problem ?

One more thing, when the connection drops, I have to reboot the computer again to make internet connection working. :)

how much time memtest will take ?

You should run it for at least 2 hours.

is it compulsory to create a CD ?

There are two types of downloads you can get, a bootable CD (.iso) and a bootable floppy disk. It has to be bootable media, so USB won't work.

Should I remove the original one and try ?

Always a good idea.

can 2 different company's ram create problem ?

No.

You didn't say what Compaq model.

Your manual: http://h10032.www1.h...l/c01035667.pdf says, you can use:
PC2-4200, 533-MHz
or
PC2-5300, 667-MHz
You said PC2, but you didn't say, if it's PC2-5300
